U.S. News & World Report names MBMC No. 1 Hospital in Mississippi for fifth year in a row

JACKSON, Miss., August 23, 2023 – U.S. News & World Report has ranked Mississippi Baptist Medical Center as the No. 1 hospital in Jackson and Mississippi for the fifth year in a row.

“Being recognized as the best hospital in Mississippi for five years in a row is a great honor that Mississippi Baptist Medical Center’s team does not take for granted,” said Bobbie Ware, CEO and administrator at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. “Our talented medical team is committed to providing the best care for all patients, and I am thankful for our staff’s continued dedication to patients and providing high-quality care for our community.”

Mississippi Baptist Medical Center also earned high-performing ratings for 12 conditions and procedures, including heart attack, congestive heart failure, colon cancer surgery, leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, lung cancer surgery, prostate cancer surgery, diabetes, back surgery, stroke, hip replacement, kidney failure and knee replacement. This rating, which is the highest U.S. News awards for conditions and procedures, recognizes care that was significantly better than the national average, as measured by such factors as patient outcomes.

The annual Procedures & Conditions Ratings, now in the 9th year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for common conditions and elective procedures. These ratings extend the U.S. News mission of providing consumers with patient decision support beyond the Best Hospitals rankings, which are geared toward complex specialty care.

For the 2023–2024 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated nearly 5,000 hospitals across 15 specialties and 21 procedures and conditions. In the 15 specialties, only 164 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. State and metro area rankings reflect the highest performing hospitals in a region across multiple areas of care.

“The hospitals named to the U.S. News Honor Roll excel across numerous specialties and service lines,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “When patients and their medical professionals are considering their options for care, the rankings are designed to help them identify hospitals that are superior in the kind of care they may need.”

U.S. News evaluated each hospital’s performance using a variety of measures, such as survival rates, complication rates, patient experience and level of nursing care. The Best Hospitals methodology factors in data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, American Hospital Association, professional organizations and medical specialists.

In 2023, U.S. News & World Report named Mississippi Baptist Medical Center the No. 1 hospital in Mississippi for the fifth year in a row. The hospital was also recognized with the Platinum Performance Achievement Award by the American College of Cardiology for its treatment of heart attack patients. Mississippi Baptist Health Systems signed a shared mission agreement with Baptist Memorial Health Care in May 2017, making Baptist Memorial one of Mississippi’s largest employers and the largest health care system in the state. Baptist Memorial is headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, and is one of the largest not-for-profit health care providers in the Mid-South with hospitals in Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi.
